CHARACTERISTIC of Atypical lymphocyte - ameboid shape
| Size | 15 - 30 um in diameter | 
| Cytoplasm | The copious cytoplasm is pale blue, except at its borders, particularly where the outer margin is in contact with neighbouring red cells, the cytoplasm is dark blue. | 
| Nucleus | Can be round, oval, reniform, lobulated or occasionally, clover-leaf shaped | 
| Chromatin | Exceptionally smooth in its dispersion | 
Infectious mononucleosis is characterized by atypical mononuclear cells or atypical lymphocytes which are mainly activated T lymphocytes produced as part of the immunological reaction to EBV-infected B lymphocytes.
